PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times) – In an effort to make the citizens of Tuol Tom Pong commune feel safer in their shops and homes, local police are now patrolling the streets near the Russian Market at night.

Sors Sarinn, the police chief of Tuol Tom Pong commune, told Khmer Times that the new motorcycle and foot patrols from 8 pm to 2 am were already making residents feel safer.

“We had to make our commune safe for citizens, especially at night because most crime occurs at night,” he added. He said he also plans to have monthly meetings with residents to help resolve the problems they face and ensure better security in the area around the Russian Market.

Residents say they welcome the sight of police patrols after dark. Architect Pan Phearom said he was already noticing that the neighborhood was getting quieter. He no longer hears people shouting for help, he said.

University student Srey Pov said she feels safer walking through her neighborhood. “I am not as afraid of crime,” she said.
